Every time when I look at Denmark's map, I want to visit Skagen and the tip of Grenen, where two seas Kattegat and Skagerrak meet each other, and the northernmost point of Denmark. It is very excited to stand with one food in one sea. But also the whole area from the tip of Grenen is very beautiful borough and surrounding countryside.

The Skagen lighthouse was responded by Professor Niels Sigfred Nelbong (1806-1871). The building took 4 years, which was because the building materials had to be transported by land to Skagn, because there was no harbour yet. On the 1st of November 1858 the tower was first lit. The first years the tower had a fixed light, until a rotating lighting apparatus replaced it in 1905. With a height of 46 meters it was Denmark's highest tower until 1962. On the bottom the diameter of the tower is 9 m and at the top 6 meters. There are 210 steps to the gallery. The tower is open to the public.

Nai Ghong Mon and I stepped the 210 steps to the top of the tower and we saw great view over the towns of Grenen and Skagen.

Look once more at the picture, and start guessing. What do you think it is? At first we thought it was a way to get up water from a very deep well. But since it was placed on a small 'hill' that sounded stupid. When we come closer and take a closer look we know that is the old style lighthouse. Of course, this is only a copy of the original, which was built - and in use - here in the first part of the 15th century.

Following the many ships being wrecked when trying to pass the northern tip of Denmark on its way to and from Skagerrak and Kattegat, many nations placed demands on the Danish government forcing them to build lighthouses on the coast.

Now the 'Parrot-lighthouse' was built on Skagen. At first it was lightened by wood from the nearby woods, but soon there were no more woods in the area, and they began import of more wood from Norway.

About 6 bushels of coal was put in the basket of the seesaw-lighthouse, and set on fire. Then up and down as the weather changed.
